ADHD Compulsive Lying

Many ADHD children have a hard time sitting still in class. Any noise in their environment will pull their attention immediately. Many times they act before they think and friends will sometimes start to distance themselves.
ADHD Can Cause Compulsive Lying
ADHD individuals are sometimes unable to use past experiences to judge future ones.

These individuals struggle to fit in everywhere and so have very low self-esteem. Some start compulsive lying. They tell lies to their friends to make themselves feel more important. They lie to teachers and family to try and save themselves the humiliation of yet another argument. Everyone is angry…including the child. They do not understand the problem. They might not even understand they are not telling the truth.

They aren't bad kids, indeed most are quite bright.  Teachers and parents think they’re lazy and just acting out; they start not to care and so there’s always trouble at home.  However, both the parents and teachers have failed to understand that this is not something they set out to do intentionally. They have an inability to use the executive function in their brain. That part that modulates behavior that helps them think about past experiences and how they will affect future ones. With this part of the brain not working, they are unable to inhibit poor behavior and poor decision making.

They just don’t have the ability to use those parts of the brain that would help them function easier. For example, having a “sense of time” is an executive function such as the ability to know how long it takes for 2 hours to pass when your mother says, "Be home in 2 hours". An ADHD child is playing video games at a friend’s house. Before they know it, 3 hours have passed. They lack the ability to shift focus and activities, knowing when to quit playing and go back to work. For this reason they never stop to complete homework. But they never set out not to do the work. Other things just got in the way.

Behavioral issues stem from an inability to separate emotion from fact. It is hard to logically think when all that is top of mind is the emotional trigger from the heated encounter. Being able to step back and think out a peaceful solution rationally is difficult. So an ADHD child reacts first and thinks later.

For all these reasons and more, ADHD individuals have very low self-esteem. They believe they are broken. There's something wrong with their brain that sets them apart. They tend to push away those who are trying to help and can be very inflexible. These children find it very hard to explain their behavior because they can't visualize the future or even remember the past. Imagine rolling down a mountain road towards a cliff in a car with no brakes, being so consumed by the fact that there are no brakes that you neglect to note the upcoming cliff. For someone with ADHD, life is just about the few seconds of road. If all you had to consider were those few seconds, then lying about whether you finished your homework seems logical. Why spend those precious seconds in trouble?

So, what can we do for these children? We help give them tools to enhance brain function and give them control. We work on all the issues keeping them from being able to live their lives productively. We improve auditory and visual processing skills to help their brain interpret better what they see and hear as well as eliminating distractibility. We help the brain and body to work together to coordination, balance, organizational and sequential skills. We help them to improve function in the frontal lobes to help those executive functions, depression and improve self-esteem.

  1. There are circumstances wherein mother and father differ with the use of drugs when their kid is acknowledged with ADHD considering such drugs will only cause them more damage or probably carry about side-effects to their kids. In many ADHD situations, having conduct remedy alone is not as successful, which is why there is still a need for appropriate ADHD treatment and this usually include the use of stimulating drugs.

  2. Chad I appreciate your insight. My son has ADHD and medication has helped him so much. It may not be for everyone but I am extremely grateful for the help the medication has given him!

  3. I am trying to help my brother. He is a prime example of this very article. ADHD, compulsive lying, low self esteem. He is of legal age now, and do not know how to help him any more. The doctors say he is is competent, so he is unable to receive state funding. how can you deal with the compulsive lying?

  4. Adhd is a load of bs. This is what doctors and rich people do...they sell a lie to people about those who are the most intelligent people on the planet. It's not adhd. It's called we see through the bullshit. Lol the rest of you live in denial, while those of us with this bs "adhd" actually realize the world only cares about one thing...money. You know how you deal with the compulsive lying? Learn to be someone who can handle the truth. Most people with this imaginary adhd that lie, only do it because most people can't handle the truth. So if the rest of the world would grow up, suck it up, and stop being so ignorant and taking everything so personal, us people with this imaginary adhd (which is really just the percent of geniuses left in the world) wouldn't have to act out. We understand you and the world, so do us a favor and actually understand us. Cause you all have failed big time lmao.

    1. Are you seriously that stupid? I also have ADHD and you don't know what you are talking about. If you don't know anything about this condition then please refrain from answering. I hate when those that don't understand have to spout their useless opinion! Also my son who is only 11 years old is a genius in the literal sense. He has a very high IQ and understands more than you could ever begin to understand. My son has a big imagination. The meds never stopped that. Obviously you were over medicated and that comes from bad doctors. So please do the world a favor and shut up! Also get a new pic. You just look stupid in this one!

    2. You are a fool. There are very few parents who wish to medicate their child, I agonised over it for a year before conceeding that counselling, social skills programs and parental love alone was not going to get my child through school and on his journey to adulthood. I hold hope that as he grows more mature he can make the choice to live medication free.

    7. ADHD is real, although some doctors over diagnose it, my daughter has it. I had to do a lot of research on it because some ignorant people think it's a farce. But it is real. At one time I thought carpal tunnel was bogus until I got it & had to have surgery. Folks, ndo your research, don't show your ignorance.

  5. Doctors tried to put my brother on that shit, me on that shit, now my nephew... It's not real. Sorry to break it to you, but adhd is a huge scam. The government is trying to control people, especially the most intelligent ones, by destroying their imaginations with drugs. Even if adhd were real, drugs are never the answer.

    2. Bill Kosco,
Have any of your doctors ever mentioned narcissistic personality disorder to you? Do a little research. You may have been misdiagnosed. You have all the symptoms written in your response. I will point them out to you...

      Egotistical
A desire to be "right" (you will retaliate in anger if opposed)
You cannot empathize with the struggle of others because you cannot see past your own struggle.
      Confrontational to prove your point
Blaming others for your "acting out" or "lying"
Making excuses to act out (delusional)
      Angry language
conspiracy theories to back up said delusions
Claims of some advanced intelligence for which you cannot prove (even here)

I honestly don't know how your doctors have missed it! lmao

    4. Bill, I agree with you. Instead of demonizing you. People should seek to understand someone in the category instead of so easily defending big pharma and attacking you. It is obvious who the narcissists are in this instance. Thanks for your insight.

  6. Bravo Tamisha, brilliant and witty post! As a psych RN, yes, ADHD is completely real and it is a difficult struggle for those who have it. I hate to break it to you BILL, but if you want to discuss something medical, know the facts first instead of coming onto a forum and harassing individuals who are dealing with real problems. I guess Bill thinks my college of nursing just made up ADHD when we covered it in psychology. LOL!

  9. I agree with Bill on ADHD. If you'd read John Ratey's (THE expert on ADHD) book Spark, you would understand that this isn't a chemical imbalance, Its that humans weren't designed to have everything given to us. We were hunters and gatherers. He has examples of how 80% of heart rate exercise can reduce and/or eliminate symptoms. ADHD medicine is almost as bad as antidepressants for those that lose a family member, emotions must be worked through. Not given medicine to repress them. Eventually, in most cases, more and more medicine is prescribed to the patient. Yet, psychiatrists spend 15 minutes for a med check. Read some of Dr Amen's books. Psychiatrists don't really look at the root cause, only treat symptoms.

  10. I usually refrain from getting involved in 'your wrong, I'm right' nonsense on web forums, but I worry about people who have no real experience or background knowledge of these issues reading some of the comments here. Btw, I'm not an expert or any kind of medical professional. As far as I'm aware, there is a great difference between a 'chemical imbalance' and a neurological disorder - which is what ADHD is classified as. I personally prefer the term 'executive disorder' as it focuses on the key issue of the disorder, and away from the over-simplistic 'you've got too much energy' understanding. There is a lot of information out there, and we could all find enough to back up whatever our pre-existing opinions or bias were, so there's no point me stating which research articles you should all rush out and read. What I will say is that there is generally a big difference between genuine research articles and other related literature. You will be able to find research related to numerous brain scans on people with executive function disorder, and control group comparisons, showing actual physical differences in parts of the brain. My point, I think, is we all have our own opinion, but don't read a few comments and believe something too quickly. Off my soap box.

  11. This artificial brought tears to my eyes. It is so me! I was finally diagnosed when I went exasperated, into my doctors office and said " I work in a call center where they go on the point system, I loose time and I just barely make it to work on time most days, on others I end up late but I truly can not tell you where the time went. over and over I say as I have since I was in middle school, tomorrow I will be on time, I will think before I say something stupid or do something stupid and I will remember the things I am supposed to remember and after a while people will forget what I flake I have become and I will be known as something else. But every single day I f**k up on one or all of those" My doctor told me I had ADHD and I laughed like seriously!? I have real problems here and you are going to tell me that I have some adolescent boy syndrome?? Next you will want me to get on what ever drug your hocking right?? But out of pure desperation, I went to see the specialist, a psychologist, he recommended and soon it became clear that I had exactly what he thought and it isn't just for little boys who cant sit still or people who cant concentrate long enough to form or complete a sentence. Girls and women can have it and it effects us differently, i actually hyper-focus and loose hours just staring at something and thinking of one thing that leads to another thing and so on. I day dream a lot without meaning to I just do. (the secret life of Walter Mitty comes to mind). They did try to say here are some meds and I did try out several. one made me so jittery that I felt drugged all the time and another DID totally stanch my creativity BUT I got everything done and on time and I was the way I had always wanted to be outwardly but inside all the creativity which is a big part of who I am, the one thing I was freaking steller at, was gone... I understand why schizophrenics say their meds make them feel abnormal and so they opt not to take them. It is truly a weird feeling to be on autopilot like someone else is driving your life...like you are stoned but with better results... I was told when I was pregnant with my first kid to discontinue the meds for a while, 3 kids later and with my family complete, I am thinking of going back on but am not looking forward to being the robot again. My only choices seem to be super robot or witty creative flake. Now, and the only reason I am on this site, I have a new problem, one of my kids...at least one, seems to be haplessly taking after me...

  12. Jose Andrews is my name, Some people keep questioning God, asking him why he allowed Satan to put in the world deadly diseases, but they never know that anything happening in this life, is just for a particular reason. Here is my story on how I was cured of schizophrenia by a herbal doctor Uwadia Amneifo using his herbal mixture. Few months ago, I realized I had some problem with my system, and later on I begin to forget things easily. I complained to my doctor after his text he said just a little problem with me, but that soon I will be fine. He prescribed for me and I was taking medicine according to his prescription but my condition was getting worse instead of coming down. So I went back to my doctor after some time, he said am having issues with my brain, this continues gradually until it became worse and I was diagnosed of schizophrenia and this disease is also known as Asperger's Syndrome. My doctor told me there is no cure to this disease that I have to live and die with it. It continued for one month and my system was almost shutting down before my cousin brother came to my house to visit and broke to us the news about a herbal doctor he heard about called doctor Uwadia Amenifo. So he explained how he heard about this herbal doctor uwadia Amenifo and the kind of terrible diseases this doctor have cured. His words were very impressing and I had to give the doctor a try. We made contact with him and he said he can cure me. So my cousin made all necessary arrangement with him, and he prepared herbs and send to me in USA. I took the herbs according to his prescription and behold to cut long story short his herbs works perfectly well, and cured me of my schizophrenia. Today I am hale and healthy and evidence of my healthiness can been seen in this piece of note I wrote myself to tell the world about Herbal Doctor Uwadia Amenifo. Please if you know anyone suffering from brain disease, in a hurry contact Doctor Uwadia Amenifo on his email (doctoruwadiaamenifo@gmail.com), and his cell no is +2349052015874. I wish all suffering from brain problem quick recovery.
